Hey! I'm here, I'm alive, and I'm more or less working on some things that will help with various things. Also some good things because Spring!

Context & Bad Things: Friday I commented a bit about being really miserable. A Bad Thing happened at school, and I was processing that. Read more... )

Good Things:

The plum, apple, and cherry trees are in full magnificent blossom here in Portland, with pear and crab-apple still in bloom but starting to drop petals and leaf out. There's that particular intense reddish pink that I want to call cherry-candy-colored but it is historically older and prettier than cherry candy! Sunrise cloud red-pink?

S and I are struggling with some communication with each other - I miss her nonverbal signals; she has a hard time finding the spoons to verbal at me - but we're very aware of it and love each other a lot and are working on it, and I think we made progress talking and listening before she needed to go to work. Progress is good!

I have discovered the Everything Croissant. You know all those seeds and spices and onion bits and more seeds you get on a good savory Everything Bagel? Try those swirled into a croissant with extra butter, and shaped like a giant muffin of croissant-y tastiness for extra silliness.

We got our community garden plot assignment at last! Payment, required training and volunteer hours, first day to weed and turn over, details of commute, and deal between me and S on who does what still to be worked out, but WE GOT ONE YAAAAAAY! And okay, it is far away, but still YAY GARDEN.

I have actually seen the sun at least briefly more days than not this past week.

One of my school kiddoes LOVES the sensory activity kit I put together for her and it is also helping with eliciting some spontaneous oral language stuff. Other stuff is complicated but hey smile of pure joy on little kid's face after squishing a squeezy toy and ringing a little silver bell = YES. Also several students keep giving me dandelions to wear at recess, so I do. <3

I have some time and some energy now and will try to go do some things accordingly.

I got veggies and things and I made food and this was a happy-making thing. I’m going to post about that instead of the things that make me miserable.

Recent gratitudes include:

Looking at almost full moon glowing in a soft pink twilight sky;

Reading a few new books by an author I like;

Listening to classical music on the radio;

Talking to people who gave me verbal kudos on a tough day;

Hugging my partner S for cozy cuddles;

Feeling the splash of cool water on my face, so refreshing when tired and stressed;

The intense sweetness of star jasmine.

The stony damp green coolth of moss.

The dusty fennel scent of cow parsley in bloom.

The peppery sawdusty tang of recently sawed green wood.

The resiny, mellow scent of the flaking cones of local evergreen trees.

The spicy citrus-tinged rose scent of a perfect full blossom on a spindly rosebush.

Trying hard to take care of myself (sleep! food! safe feelings! water!), do my work, and still accomplish some of the little things that make life better. I will do the smart things! And it will work!!! Because!!!!!

Recent good things:

- Porch Cat came down off the porch and sat in my lap for petting!
- Among my impulsive grocery purchases the other day were some organic black olives that turned out to be really really tasty and have raised my bar for what to expect/accept.
- I am rereading "Always Coming Home," by Ursula K. Le Guin, and it is, as always, one of the most remarkable books I have ever read.
- I have a safe bed with soft pillows in a functional apartment. This is worth noting.
- My partner S and I continue to have lots of quiet walks and lots of hugs.

The bobtail neighbor-cat. Apparently S and I are significantly more skritch-permission-worthy than the mail carrier, which makes me feel absurdly honored.

Crows. They are noisy, ubiquitous, a bit shabby this time over year, but also dramatic, lively, and amazing to watch in flight.

Yards full of flowers. I am not sure it is technically possible for me to be specific, as my impression of the particular yard that I have in mind is "they have one or more of everything, including some stuff I've never seen before." But one I can identify is spiky blue flowers in genus Echinops, probably sp. ritro, known as globe thistles. They have silver-blue flower centers that look like curled-up hedgehogs!

So I met a sleek stripy-spotty tabby cat with a white chin yesterday, and sat on the sidewalk to say hi and pet if wanted, and cat decided I had to make a lap then and there and I ended up with lap of purring new cat friend for at least ten minutes. This was a very good thing.

* I got to pet and skritch my friend the Porch Cat - the rangy fluffy gray with white paws who always sits in the same spot on his porch - today. I also got to pet a very friendly collie.

Shiny things can be pretty repetitive! And that’s okay. I did new things yesterday, I did familiar and useful but good things today, tomorrow will be different and busy (because summer school is starting) it’s all good.

Worked on the Writy Thing. Words are difficult when they matter a lot.

In ongoing news, I suck at Adulting and so do the people I spend the most time around and so, apparently, do most of the theoretical Adults on the planet.

Okay! Shiny Things time!

Today I am grateful for:

. S. making us breakfast AND coffee, wow.

. Clean dishes which I washed the night before. And the day before. And the day before that. And today after breakfast. THE POINT IS, I am grateful they are clean.

. The art of fandom and geekdom and fantasy worlds. Because kitten in a Godzilla suit stomping a block city. RAWR kitten. Also, orca mermaid. And winged wolf. And kitten cuddling a leetle dragon. And so much shiny pretty beautifulness.

. People who listen to me. People who WANT to listen to me. People I can listen to and learn from. People I WANT to listen to.

. My most-bestest fuzzy-fluffy-furry brownish-sable-y pair of cat ears. If putting on my cat ears makes me feel like the world is a slightly better place, then, by darn, I will put on my cat ears and WILL the world to be better. And slightly fuzzier.

ETA:

. Pot liquor from cooking dark leafy greens, used to make extra-nutritious tea. I don't even really like the taste, it just hits the spot somehow? I must be missing some micronutrient or another. Better figure out what so I can eat more or I'll boil the lining off my pots and then drink it, which would be unhealthy. Also maybe I should get better kitchen gear where "better" is " probably lower tech and made from natural materials." I'm very grateful for silicon grab mats and copper-bottomed stainless pots, I just don't see why they shouldn't exist alongside an iron kettle and a stone mortar and pestle.

. Stretches and limbering up as adjuncts of deep breathing and mindful listening and/or meditation. I got this idea by way of Westernized yoga, but it's everywhere once you look for it.

. A book (by Seanan Maguire) in which, in the midst of all sorts of fantastical world building and creepy wonderfulness, a gunshot wound to the arm is treated with unexpected realism as to its seriousness.
