A superlatively skilled and gifted Bard of my acquaintance is seeking themes for writing prompts. Some selected themes will be the basis of upcoming Poetry Fishbowls, a regularly scheduled audience-participation event, which results in the writing of excellent poetry. Much of the artist's previous work has been in serial narratives featuring vivid characters of variously marginalized identities.

http://ysabetwordsmith.dreamwidth.org/11059588.html

Please go suggest themes! What topic do you really wish someone would tackle that never comes up? What genre, mood, symbol-set, or aesthetic pleases you?

AI teaches itself to walk, run, jump inside a physics simulation. Comes up with a flappy runny sometimes-sideways walking style. Looks inefficient to many self-appointed experts. Works well.

I am feeling my robot side today. And angry that people have a problem with flappy arm running.

EDIT: Note to self: Write a proper video transcript/descript to share, darn it!

The wonderful [personal profile] conuly has been attempting to feed, medicate, and shelter two semi-feral kittens, and has finally got them into a safe contained space. Anyone in the greater NYC area interested in two baby kitties who are a bit wild and shy but young enough to learn to love people?

Edited: If not, once they've been checked up and cleaned up and properly treated for eye troubles, they'll be moving on...to a shelter, a foster home, or TNR, depending on what's available and how their socialization goes.

One of many things I like to look at are sunlit water ripples whether reflected off a lake/ocean/etc, refracted onto the bottom of a pool, or seen from underneath.

Here are some videos.

Ideas for audio or tactile-art or text-based equivalents for spangly ripples?

(So far I have thought of: the kind of fruit-based sorbet that is soft with crunchy frozen bits of fruit; the bubbles in ginger ale; the feeling of a vibrating massager on hands/fingertips or another sensitive but not private body part; the smell of fresh oranges; the sound of chimes.)

I don't have anything very coherent to say about the Fourth of July and what it means and has meant to me any why it is different for me this year and not-different for some other people and what else I'm thinking of because of that. So I'll let some friends have their say instead.

Babbling...I need to remember that the founding of the United States was definitely NOT an unmixed good for many people, especially the Native American nations that were decimated or genocided as colonial settlement. And some people are NOT okay with fireworks. And if there is a point to this line of thought, it's that this year things are definitely not improving and that's not okay. And that it is still true that this holiday is and has been important to me, and that I do still feel something like love and loyalty for my incredibly deeply awful nation.

Autistic people (and our brain-cousins) are overall better at making rationally consistent small choices without being pressured one way or the other by the informational context. Less integration of the overall 'look' of things, more clarity on detail. Local and global processing, I notice you.

I'd say I'm an alien, given what I'm good and bad at, except that logically-inconsistent allistic-centered societies are rapidly trying to get themselves booted off Earth--

Pride isn't just a celebration. It is that and that is important. But it's also a lifeline to young queer kids. It's a protest and a form of action and so many other things.

https://fontfolly.net/2017/06/20/gay-it-forward/

Whether you are queer yourself or (hopefully!) an ally to queerfolk, please look up your local pride event. Or Google "queer homeless teens." Or "black trans lives matter" or "Two Spirit Native lgbtqia+"... Support as you can.

And remember: survival is resistance.

Do you want to watch a video of a hedgehog or guinea pig being cute and cuddly? What about reading up on honeybees or listening to some birdcalls?

I am taking time to appreciate the soothing, the informative, the beautiful, and yes, the adorable. Yes, the world is a mess and humanity is busy making it even more of a mess, but there are still good things. It is important to me to notice them. Read more... )

Thanks, friends, for recommending things - and for making things!

I've been reading rather a lot, as a way to de-stress. Gorgeous, queer, friendship-centric, wtf-romantic, fiction about love and helping people and coping with screwups. A few rereads of familiar novels and some snippets of fic I've read over and over. And a book about plants. But nonetheless, it has been a busy weekend, and I'm wondering where it went.

Also, I'll be listening to my Bone Walker CD on repeat in the car this week. It goes along with a very cool series of fantasy books, but it's also just a great mix of energizing flavors from traditional sea chanties to instrumental dances to a wildly energetic nerdcore remix of said dance music. The lead musician is also blogging extremely useful news updates for the resistance, here on Dreamwidth. Dara Korra'ti is a self-identified principled supervillian and one of the most badass people I've had the pleasure to listen to.

ETA: For anyone using a screen reader, the following links may be more compatible, if you wish to get a taste of the music.

Content advisory: May contain supervillains, creepy monsters creeping up, snatches of story, traditional ballads with their silly sexism, brief ableist language in the form of commonly used metaphors, politically aware perspective pointing out that things really suck, deeply nerdy concepts, musical genre puree, epically noisy instruments, sounds that send shivers up my spine, and other scattered things.

For those wondering how to survive the current political climate in the US (and elsewhere).

Our activist elders who are who are trans, queer, black, POC, disabled, different, who are intersectionally oppressed, have done this before. They know how to fight and how to build while under threat. Let's listen.

One resource is this collection of writings:

https://olderqueervoices.com/
put together specifically to highlight the voices of the LGBTQIA+ elders who are still with us and teach us how they have done survival activism and superb art in a time and place that hated them.

I haven't read everything there, but enough to know I'll turn to it when I need it.

I'll be back with more another time...
