Sorry that I have been not here very much recently. School continues stressful, I've added gardening which is coming out of my sleep schedule it seems like, and I have had to do a ton of cleaning because of reasons related to school job you can probably figure out, and I just. Argh. I will be all right, I miss you folks, and I will be back more often when I can.

Wrote a few sentences. Post to be posted tomorrow with the things and bits. Will try to finish 1 of the missing scenes from the outlined short story.

I am at my parent’s home, my childhood home, in Kansas City, cleaning out my closet and bedroom. About sixteen large boxes of papers to go thru, ranging from elementary on up thru grad school, much of it sorted repeatedly but all still needing reorganizing and tossing of much of it, but not all - I refuse to toss everything. Lots of fun going thru memories; avoiding ruminating on change, loss, etc so far. Joy in noticing continuities and recovering old creative work. I was very prolific with poetry, sketching, world-building, and childish short stories! Need to tap back into some of it and keep going. Feeling strange but overall positive at this point. Just shy of halfway of a first pass thru all the boxen, getting rid of obvious junk only.

Also, I'll be listening to my Bone Walker CD on repeat in the car this week. It goes along with a very cool series of fantasy books, but it's also just a great mix of energizing flavors from traditional sea chanties to instrumental dances to a wildly energetic nerdcore remix of said dance music. The lead musician is also blogging extremely useful news updates for the resistance, here on Dreamwidth. Dara Korra'ti is a self-identified principled supervillian and one of the most badass people I've had the pleasure to listen to.

ETA: For anyone using a screen reader, the following links may be more compatible, if you wish to get a taste of the music.

Content advisory: May contain supervillains, creepy monsters creeping up, snatches of story, traditional ballads with their silly sexism, brief ableist language in the form of commonly used metaphors, politically aware perspective pointing out that things really suck, deeply nerdy concepts, musical genre puree, epically noisy instruments, sounds that send shivers up my spine, and other scattered things.

So there's a thing!

So I decided to write a brief conversation with one of my characters to help me get into better understanding the moments of conflict and change in the story I've been working on for awhile. And, well, Alauno showed up to royally tell me off for leaving her in her current stuck place plotwise.

And also hammer home a message that all the things I'm doing are really part of the same task. Again. (THANK YOU, universe, dropping the exact type of ***beadwork*** I've been doing in also was *more* than enough on top of the *breathwork* during the professional development session on childhood trauma and resilience.)

She got a bit stroppy. Like writer, like character perhaps.

(And oh great, I called myself an writer, I really really really have to get my daily 500 words in all February. Good start today...)

If you've been reading and commenting for awhile, I probably consider you a friend.

(If you've just started reading my journal in the last day or week or month, I hope we become friends.)

If you are or will be in the vicinity of Portland, OR, USA and want to interact, please drop me a comment or a message here on DW. I'm not *great* at people but y'all are definitely worth trying for.

Thanks.

Instead of New Year’s Resolutions, I’m doing New Month Resolutions. I think this is preferable because setting a personal goal for one month lets me assess and redirect. This gives me the opportunity to go from beginning to end in a short enough time frame to think through each day and week of working with that goal, to diagnose what helped and what didn’t help. It means that if I meet my goal, I can set a new goal that build on it, or turn to another area. If I don’t meet my goal, I can reframe it, or focus elsewhere for awhile. I can do each of these several times, if necessary. By the end of the year, I should hopefully have twelve interesting experiments in hacking my own brain to achieve things.

I sort of had to reinvent the wheel on this one, because I needed it to be *my* wheel. In spite of having awesome examples of people who set goals, meet goals, fall short of goals and reassess, and set new goals in front of me literally every day. Read more... )

Apparently for a lot of people, breaking a goal down exhaustively for how to do it and measure it isn’t strictly required. Read more... )

For January, my resolution is a daily writing goal.
