AI teaches itself to walk, run, jump inside a physics simulation. Comes up with a flappy runny sometimes-sideways walking style. Looks inefficient to many self-appointed experts. Works well.

I am feeling my robot side today. And angry that people have a problem with flappy arm running.

EDIT: Note to self: Write a proper video transcript/descript to share, darn it!

Today's random shiny things in my life are brought to you by The Internet. Which, like the world, contains much suck but also much awesome. Including your presence; welcome.

I love wols! For those of you who insist on standard spelling, also known as owls. Once again, please give credit to the intrepid [personal profile] cmcmck and [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith for inspiring me to dive down a research rabbit hole. Except it’s more of a burrowing owl hole this time, though I didn’t really focus on those.

WOLS OF WASHINGTON AND OREGON
Some wols in my vicinity:

We all love unexpected, bizarre science news, right?

What about people writing fic and/or poetry for us? That's good too, right?

Grab your mad/fun/weird science prompts and head over to ysabetwordsmith's place. The Poetry Fishbowl is live, and has been for awhile, so hurry before the experimental results are in!

I want to pet a velociraptor. Which would be about chicken sized. RAWR.

...My brain is weird when I am tired.

In the interest of inspiring people to be RAWR, shiny and occasionally brave things:

- Going to the public library
- Asking kids what their favorite and least favorite parts of the day were
- Playing Foursquare
- Petting a golden retriever
- Listening to a video mashup of the Pokemon theme and Lady Gaga - oh dear gods why, but also, why not.

Turning Up the Volume: Sound

* This is a post on coping skills. It is specifically about using loud and/or attention grabbing sounds to help manage sensory difficulties and improve one’s mood. I have A LOT of caveats about giving advice, which you can find: here .

* Someday I may possibly make a post about self-care and avoiding overload for people at the intersection of sensory processing difficulties and anxiety. This is not that post. This is about when you WANT overload, or at least, the maximum possible stimulation of a sense that doesn’t cause damage or hurt bad.

* Content Warnings for this subset of my coping skills posts: things people have to cope with; annoying sensory, somatic, and psychological states; potential discussion of R-rated coping skills; medically inadvisable activities; part of a work in progress.

I got a bottle rocket launcher! And a bunch of really cool books and cooperative children's games and some miscellaneous school supplies, all from colleagues cleaning out their classrooms. But I'm especially excited about the bottle rocket launcher. It is all homemade, came with instructions for building another one, and uses wood and string and rubber bands and recycled bits of metal and an o-ring and an attachment point for a bicycle pump to MAKE THINGS GO FLYING! Woohoo!

I am eating a fruit that is new to me. It is known as a haskap berry or honeysuckle blueberry.

Cut for content: food descriptions, gratuitous science.
