A superlatively skilled and gifted Bard of my acquaintance is seeking themes for writing prompts. Some selected themes will be the basis of upcoming Poetry Fishbowls, a regularly scheduled audience-participation event, which results in the writing of excellent poetry. Much of the artist's previous work has been in serial narratives featuring vivid characters of variously marginalized identities.

Please go suggest themes! What topic do you really wish someone would tackle that never comes up? What genre, mood, symbol-set, or aesthetic pleases you?

Actually worked a bit on the Writey Thing for the first time, I think, since April.

I somehow drabbled. This is pure setting-background scenery-brainstorming sense-detail, came out in second person for no particular reason, dunno if it will be in the story, but I have got to be writing on the regular, I need that habit and that mode of expression. I'll take it.

Mentions food, wilderness. Here it is.

Grateful for:

magnolia trees in full bloom

beeswax from local-ish hives

sunlight

hugs some from some of my students

food

iodized salt

One line snippet of writing (still trying!):
(Actually this is a snippet I like better from the other day. But I did write a sentence. STILL TRYING NOT GIVING UP. Although all weekend I wrote image descriptions for pictures of cute animals and extra research / student intervention notes for school, not fiction as planned, but it was different and relevant so OKAYS moving along.)

Awakening. Morning uncurls tendrils of slow sunlight wavering across the bed cover and the exhausted mother’s dark hair.

Wrote a few sentences. Post to be posted tomorrow with the things and bits. Will try to finish 1 of the missing scenes from the outlined short story.

Another tiny short bit I don't necessarily feel up to posting per se. This one was actual story content! Also I figured out why that scene is stuck, so research this weekend! Will proofread and compile these draft bits to post soon. I promise.

I did write something yesterday, but I didn't post it so... we'll see if I can catch up today!

So I decided to write a brief conversation with one of my characters to help me get into better understanding the moments of conflict and change in the story I've been working on for awhile. And, well, Alauno showed up to royally tell me off for leaving her in her current stuck place plotwise.

And also hammer home a message that all the things I'm doing are really part of the same task. Again. (THANK YOU, universe, dropping the exact type of ***beadwork*** I've been doing in also was *more* than enough on top of the *breathwork* during the professional development session on childhood trauma and resilience.)

She got a bit stroppy. Like writer, like character perhaps.

(And oh great, I called myself an writer, I really really really have to get my daily 500 words in all February. Good start today...)

I wanted to make sure I *posted* some writing to help me stay encouraged to actually write. This is a background snippet that probably won't make it into the original sf short story I'm working on but may give a sense of the aesthetic of the setting. It is a rough draft that I just wrote today and will be editing, but wanted to post pre-edit because planning to post post-edit has historically resulted in me not posting anything. Constructive criticism is welcome. I'm terrifyingly aware that I have succumbed entirely to purple prose and that the uneven second person is way above my actual skill level. Content note: visual imagery focused, second person, very little plot. I'm posting this anyway. Yay?

Petted my calico neighbor cat. Super friendly and a sweet little trilling voice.

Walked around the neighborhood, a little bit.

Noticed one rose in bloom on a severely trimmed-back rose bush. January in Portland, I don't know.

Reread some comfort reading.

Might've helped someone a little bit, maybe.

Met writing goal. Read more... )

Demifiction: Letter To A Super Hurrah

While reading the comments and discussion around a new story featuring Ashley in the Polychrome Heroics setting - thank you Ysabetwordsmith and siliconshaman and everyone - I was struck by the impulse to write fan mail to the superherx characters … in character as a kid in that universe. So I did. :) This will probably make NO sense if you don't follow that original fiction setting, so considered yourself duly warned... Edits to come, probably.

(Paper mailed to Ashley Maddison c/o Easy City SPAZMAT, a week or so after the events of "Chase” by siliconhaman. Written on decorative notebook paper with dancing skeletons, carefully written in purple fine-tip marker over a pencil draft. Yes, I know it’ll take some doing for Ashley to read it without disintegrating it … but Kaytee doesn’t know that for sure yet.)

Dr MS A-s-H-l-e-y-

Dear Ms. Ashley,

I said you on the news and you so cool and smart. And strong and you wear pretty clothes. Because my mama says that you are a super hurrah and you saved the butterfly girl from the kid nabbers. And I like butterflies and cats and my favorite is the black widow spider and the ladybug and crickets and katydids because they are my name and also wasps because they put eggs in the caterpillars ALIVE! And I studied the berettaflies for my insects projects and I did an extra poem and two drawings because I could not put an alive or a close up photograph insect in the poured folio. Here is a drawing of a berettafly for you, next time my mama will skin my good drawing with the skinner at her work so I can keep it but now this is only a drawing on the tablet my mama’s tablet.

I think you are SO COOL and you are AW SOME and I think it is so pretty your clothes that you wear because they are the scary kind of bountiful. I want to be a super hurrah like you when I grow up.

Love Kaytee

The exact date is up to working out! And events referenced vaguely as in the news / discussed by a random adult in NOLA can be modified, if they aren’t publicly known.

The basic idea is that this is a rising third grader, quite gifted in some ways and lagging behind peers in others, who loves dark and slightly scary and “too old for you” things like gory information about insects but is basically a happy, innocent kid, and her “wanna grow up to be you” squish (is this correct usage?) on Ashley, a dark superhera who deserves more fans.
