I think I will go curl up in a corner at the home of a friend with air conditioning. Or the bookstore. It's okay now, but the hazy smoke from forest fires affecting air quality is gonna get worse and the heat is going to be record-breaking. Can't even *go* places to beat the heat because it's too hot and smoky.

I know I know it could be worse. I could be in the hospital because of the smoke, or trying to cope without even an apartment to stay at, or much more sensitive to heat than I am, or living someplace much hotter, or in one of the places actually on fire, or or or... This still sucks!

ETA: I can taste the smoke in the back of my throat though it's still only 85. Going down the street to the grocery and bookstore; will be out indefinitely. Bringing compy obvs.

ETAA: I can handle the heat but not the CAN'T BREATHE gods. Considering falling asleep in a corner between bookshelves in the air conditioned store. Even if everyone else from MTG night who was interested bails I'm driving up Mt. Hood tomorrow. This is NOPE.

Yes, it could be worse—what's your point? :P

Go find AC yes good? I don't know what to say about the air quality except thank fuck I'm not over there. (Am selfish yes. :P )

(±) I have a functioning aircon, but that's because I live in Texas and everyone pretty much has to. The heat index got up to 45 °C the other week and it was difficult to go out… almost the opposite situation of yours. It's cooler now (29 °C, heat index 37 °C (o..O)), and I wish I could give you some of it? If it would help? I don't know.

Anyway, your situation sounds worse because the mitigations are more disruptive. I keep hearing about people in the PNW getting be-aughed by this heat wave, so. ;..; Please take care of yourself.

keep cool, take care of yourself. one of the odd things i noticed when living in the seattle area was how few people had air conditioning.

yeah, but from where you're sitting it's already pretty bad
gonna second alexseanchai on this one - it *could* be worse, what's your point?

i wonder if wetting down a bandanna or something, then sticking it in the freezer to cool off with later would be at all practical? you could drape it across your back or face or anything else that's too hot for comfort atm

*sends love and good thoughts* I'm glad it's not worse for you. <3 It sounds terrible just the way it is already. I hope it gets better soon!

Ugh, heat is the worst :( I hope you are keeping cool or coolish anyways. I don't have air conditioning either, or a car - so getting to air conditioning is problematic when needed. It hasn't been too bad this year luckily, though the heat we tend to get comes hand in hand with high humidity more often than not, which is never fun.

Oh, that's terrible! We had a cool and not-on-fire summer last time, but most years there's at least a few weeks of smoke inhalation, so I feel you on that one. I hope you (and the people directly affected by the fire as well as the smoke) get a break in the weather soon.

For heat, a "hillbilly air conditioner" (fan blowing over a flat pan full of ice) will cool off a person and a computer, though it won't cool a whole room. Actual air conditioners have filters in them, but I'm not sure they're much use against smoke... but you can buy a whole-room air filter, some of which can deal with very fine particulates (filtering ability is directly proportional to price, alas).

Most of the stores, libraries, etc., that have air conditioning around here set it to "energy saving" levels, which means it might go clear down to 78° F. I don't even consider that "air conditioned" :-(

All you need is a cheap electric fan, a shallow pan (something like a lasagna pan - even a disposable foil pan will work, although they tend to spill), and some ice. Arrange it so that the fan blows towards you, across the pan full of ice; replace ice as necessary.

I hope you've found cooler, cleaner air that made you feel better!

I've never been anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, and I'm not really a big fan of the outdoors (I'm a very bad Pagan). But I can appreciate the feeling of peace and cleanliness - nothing conveys that better than tall pines beside a mountain lake!
